Integrated Unit on Totalitarism

The last integrated unit of this school year was one on totalitarims, where the students had the chance to work in cooperative teams and dream about a different world, describe pictures, enjoy the final speech of the amazing film The Great Dictator and, as a final project, give voice to its trailer. 

They all did a wonderful job!

Describe of the picture. Orange team.

The photo shows Benito Mussolini and he is wearing soldier clothes. He has his right hand up but he is of the extrem left. He has a body guard to his right. This photo was taken during II World War when Italy was allied with Germany. behind Mussolini, we can see many skyscrapers. Benito Mussolini expresses power and dictatorship country.

As we can see in the picture there are three people wearing rain coats and hats. We can not know the colours of these clothes because the picture was taken in black and white.

 This picture was taken in 1938 in Germany, while Hitler was a dictator there. 

 This photo shows "The night of the broken glasses" so we can see shop windows broken. This picture reprents the injustice to Jew people at this time. In the middle there are two people looking at the destroyed shops. 

Description of a picture: "The holocaust". White team

The picture shows the Holocaust in a concentration camp. It was taken during the Nazi period. It is a black and white photo where you can see many jews living in bad conditions. In the foreground there is a jew standing without clothes and he is very thin. In the background there are many jews lying in terrible beds because they are together and they haven´t opt any pillow or mattress and they use the plates as pillows. We think that this picture conveys sorrow and it shows us the importance of Human Rights (freedom, liberty, eguality...), which the Jews didn´t have.

Describing a picture in English! Blue team

The photo shows Hitler with the Nazi flag. The picture of Hitler is black and white. At the bottom there is the flag in colours and at the top there is the dictator, Hitler.

The Emperor, Hitler, is serious and thoughtful.

The flag has got a black swastika cross in the middle of a white circle and the rest of the rectangular flag red. 

The picture isn´t attractive because is dull. We think Hitler has his look in an objetive, which is to get a big nation with German people.

The flag might be a symbol of repression of Jews and other people who didn´t belong to Germany and a symbol of Fascism.

In the pictures, I can see a man. I think that this person is a soldier. He is not doing anything. This person is thinking and he is very serious. I think that the man is around 40 years old. I think the name of this pictures is "The Big Soldier". In the picture there is only a soldier, this soldier maybe is tall and strong. His eyes are black and small. He is wearing a uniform and on his head he has got a hat. His uniform is green and red and his hat is black and red. This is the description of the soldier.

The picture shows two military cars. I think it was taken in the WWII. This photo is a coloured photo.

In the background you can see a very big official building and a lot of people. In the foreground there are two military man in two military cars. The cars are are dark green. On the corner of the cars there is a yellow flag. The cars have four big wheels. Inside the upper part of the cars there are two soldiers. They are wearing helmets and green clothes like the car. They have a machine gun in theirs hands.

Maybe the cars were in a parade because the goverment wanted to show their power.

In the background of the picture I see behind Hitler million of soldiers were supporting the Nazi ideology. All of them support the same flag of the Nazi Party. Also, there is an eagle in the sky. The main character is wearing a uniform and on the left arm he has a symbol of Nazism. He has his hand up, which represents the power of all Germany. He was the dictator of Germany. February 14, St. Valentine's Day, is said to be a day for people who are in love. No matter whether you have a boyfriend or girlfriend or whether you like someone in particular or not, there must be lots of people you love: your parents, your brothers and sisters, your relatives, your friends . . . In fact, there are many people that make our lives nicer, aren't there?

Peace and Non-Violence

America has celebrated Martin Luther King Day since 1983 on the third Monday in January. Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. was an important person in the American Civil Rights movement, who believed in non-violence. He campaigned against segregation and inequality and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. In 1963 he gave his most famous speech, which contains the well-known phrase I have a dream.

Here you can enjoy most of this important speech. Then, think about the way in which you can contribute to improve the world and post a comment beginning like this: 

"I have a dream that . . . "

Do you need some kind of inspiration? Then you can listen to Someday, a song from Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Watch the video and listen to it. It has a beautiful message.

Towards American Independence

As you know, these days we are working on the origins of the American independence. Last week you made your presentations on different aspects of the life of the puritan pilgrims (the first English colonists).  Now we will learn about the way in which life in the colonies evolved, we will review what you studied in your history lessons and we will learn some new facts and details.
